Job Summary

  • Evaluate, dispense, and appropriately file outpatient and indigent prescriptions.
  • Counsel employees and indigent patients on the appropriate use of medications.
  • Maintain outpatient inventory.
  • Supervise pharmacy technical staff.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required

  • BS degree in Pharmacy
  • License to practice pharmacy in Alabama
  • Prior practice experience preferred
  • Proficiency in the use of the English language and grammar
  • Proficiency in mathematics
  • Ability to work in stressful environment
  • Ability to effectively communicate with people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds

Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions

  • Determines and recommends the most appropriate and cost effective drug therapy through a review of patient specific data and approved formulary protocols.
  • Adequately evaluates patient data for potential drug-drug interactions and duplicate therapy, and allergy data.
  • Ensures accuracy and timeliness of medications dispensed through the distribution system.
  • Accurately transcribes, fills, and dispenses outpatient prescriptions.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of state and federal laws governing the practice of pharmacy and practices pharmacy in a professional, legal, and ethical manner.
  • Provides routine drug information to healthcare providers and the outpatient population.
  • Counsels the outpatient population on new prescriptions.
  • Participates in staff development.  Attends at least one pediatric and one geriatric staff development a year.
  • Ensures that routine department functions are carried out in the absence of a manager.
  • Adequately assists in training and supervision of pharmacy technicians.
